Hosts girls continue winning in handball

LUCKNOW : Hosts Uttar Pradesh continued their winning streak in the 35th National Sub-Junior Girls Handball Championsh­ip, defeating Assam 31-11 in a league match to lead the Group D, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium here on Sunday.

Nikki and Aradhana showed their might once again, netting seven goals each. Kajal Saini too scored seven goals, whereas Muskan and Fatima netted three goals each.

Defending champions Sports Authority of India, runners-up Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar and Punjab reached the pre-quarterfin­als, winning all their matches in their respective groups.

SAI defeated Andhra Pradesh by 22-17, whereas Kerala defeated Karnataka by 17-4. Delhi beat Assam 30-0, Himachal Pradesh beat MP 17-1 goals. Likewise in Haryana crushed Uttarakhan­d 18-1.

In other matches in Bihar defeated Karnataka by 19-7, whereas the tie between Punjab and Maharashtr­a ended in a draw with both the teams scoring 14 goals each.

PAWAN SHINES

Pawan Batham emerged victorious in the open category of the Sunday Class with the highest five points here. Ravi Shankar, Manab Bhattachar­jee, Arjun Singh and Kuldeep Shankar finished second, third, fourth and fifth, respective­ly.

In the divyang category, David Jung topped with threeand-a-half points. Sainam Shrivastav­a in under-10, Medhansh Saxena in under-14, and Madhur Singh in under-16 finished top in their respective categories.

RAHUL EXCELS

A four-wicket haul by Rahul Tiwari (4/24) helped Brightway Club beat Chandan XI by five wickets in a D division league tie here on Sunday.

Chandan XI got out got 86 in 30.1 overs while batting first after winning the toss and in reply, Brightway Club romped home in 20.3 overs.

BIG WIN

Paramount Club notched up a facile 172-run win against Asha Foundation in a league match of the Deepak Saxena Memorial Tournament, at the Aryavart Ground here on Sunday. After piling up 232/5 in 30 overs, Paramount Club restricted the rivals for 60/5 in 30 overs.
