Purnank bags career-best 7/65, helps UP take lead

Seamer Tyagi dazzles against defending champions Vidarbha, UP score 5/148 in second innings

LUCKNOW: Young seamer Purnank Tyagi took his career best haul of 7/65 and helped former champions Uttar Pradesh take a slender but thrilling 32-run first innings lead against hosts and defending champions Vidarbha in the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy final at Nagpur on Wednesday.

Last year’s semi-finalist Uttar Pradesh then lost five wickets for 148 and extended their overall lead to 180 in the second innings at the end of the penultimate day of the four-day encounter, at the VCA Stadium. Dhruv Chand Jurel (32) and Sameer Choudhary (9) were at the crease at draw of stumps.

Right-arm pacer Purnank was in his element on Wednesday, making things difficult for Vidarbha batsmen from the very first ball at the third day’s play as soon as hosts resumed at the overnight score of 173/5. He first had Prerit Agarwal (13) caught by keeper Dhruv Chand Jurel, before bagging the prized-wicket of YV Rathod (75, 226b, 10x4) in similar fashion.

Rathod’s 48-minute seventhwicket stand with Harsh Dubey (35*, 60b, 5x4) had once put UP men in trouble as he was playing the ball with straight bat, giving no opportunity to them, but he once departed in the 92nd over, Purnank ran through the Vidarbha batting with second new ball and got them out for 251. UP scored 283 in their first innings.

Purnank finished with a figure of 23.2-2-65-7. Mohit Jangra, Kartik Tyagi and Shivam Sharma shared the other three wickets between them.

Despite conceding lead in the first innings, Vidarbha bowlers, especially Nachiket Bhute and Harsh Dubey bowled superbly and took two wickets each to leave Uttar Pradesh struggling at 5/148. Any lead less that 250 would not be safe for UP, which need to bat as much as they could on the final day of the encounter on Thursday.

Harsh Dubey had Ansh Yadav (33, 91b, 3x4, 1x6) and Sameer Rizvi (5), whereas Harsh accounted for Aryan Juyal (13) and Priyam Garg (1). It was skipper Aryan Sharma, who saved the day for UP in the second innings, hitting 134-ball 52, which contained six boundaries and two sixes. Before being caught by BK Naidu off Teken, Aryan added 77-run for the second wicket with Ansh Yadav.
