LUCKNOW: Three MBBS students found guilty in the fight between students and staff at the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) , were suspended on Wednesday and asked to vacate the hostel.

The institute had formed a committee that took the decision after watching the CCTV footage and reading the students’ response to the show cause notice issued by the committee.

To note, on Tuesday, the students and staff at the OPD counter had fought with each other and damaged property over issuing an OPD slip in the oncology building.

“Notices were issued to both students of 2019 batch and staff. The committee found the students guilty hence the decision to suspend them was taken till further orders or completion of the inquiry,” said Dr Vikram Singh, spokesperson of the institute.

The incident occurred at 9 am when a 2019 batch student came to the counter to get an OPD slip issued for someone.

“The contractual staff at the counter asked him to wait and this made the student so irate that he allegedly used abusive language. The counter staff replied and within minutes they entered into a quarrel,” said Dr Singh.

Supporters from both sides entered the scene and the counter became a battleground. Students pulled the contractual staff out of the counter and when he scampered back, they broke the glass and allegedly damaged hospital property. As more contractual staff gathered, the entire work came to a halt and patients witnessed a bad scene. The security personnel could not do anything.

In the show cause notice, the chairperson of the committee Prof Nuzhat Hussain has asked the students to explain why they fought with the staff, as seen in the CCTV footage.

The committee also asked the accused students as to why they called their friends to the place, why were they in the OPD area during class hours and why did they damage hospital property? They were also asked why did they not inform the chief medical superintendent if there was an issue of OPD registration?

The charges against the staff are also being screened by the probe committee and action will be decided when the inquiry is over.
