EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE CAPTAINS, HEAVED A SIGH OF RELIEF EVEN BEFORE THE TOSS AS THERE WAS NO RAIN AND THE SUN SHONE BRIGHTLY AFTER TWO DAYS OF SHOWERS

LUCKNOW India defeated Bangladesh by 34 runs in the first ODI of the five-match series between the two Under-23 sides at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday.

But the Bangladesh Under-23 side made a hash of the chase, collapsing for 158 in 48.4 overs, as their batsmen fell to the guile of the spin trio of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Hritik Shokeen and Shubhang Hegde.

The visitors were 99/5 at one stage, and an 88-run sixth wicket stand between Mahadi Hasan (20, 24b, 1x4, 1x6) and Mohammed Ariful Haque (38, 72b, 3x4) had threatened to upset the home side’s applecart before the spinners settled the issue.

Mohammed Zakir Hasan topscored for the Bangladesh with 48 off 67 balls, studded with two fours and a six before being retiring hurt. Robiul Haque (21) and Md Mehidy Hassan Mirza (20) tried to shore up the innings, but Indian bowlers kept the Bangladeshi batsmen on a tight leash.

Earlier, despite losing opener Yashasvi Bhupendra Jaiswal for a duck off the third ball of the day, Aryan Juyal helped India cross the 150-run mark, hitting an 86-ball 69 with the help of two fours and a six.

A 64-run second wicket partnership between BR Sharath (42, 57b, 7x4) and Madhav Kaushik (20, 48b) also helped the home side steady the innings.
