LUCKNOW: A marketing executive of an automobile company was killed after the over-speeding car he was travelling in rammed into a road divider on Shaheed Path in Sarojini Nagar police station limits here on Saturday afternoon. However, his friend, who was driving the car, escaped unhurt in the accident, said police.

The victim was identified as Nikhil Jauhar, a resident of Delhi, employed as marketing executive of a leading automobile company at its Gurgaon office, police said. “He had come to Lucknow on Saturday to visit a showroom of the company but he met with the accident while he along with his colleague Rohit Sharma, was heading towards the showroom,” they said. Sharma was driving the car while Nikhil was sitting on the front seat when the accident took place.

While talking to media persons, Sharma said that they were heading towards the automobile company showroom via Shaheed Path when the accident took place. “I was not aware of the city roads so I was following the cars of my other Lucknow based colleagues while driving,” he said.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses and locals said that the car was over speeding, but Sharma said the car speed was in control according to its make. “The car’s rear wheels suddenly slipped while I took a sharp turn on Shaheed Path. I lost the control over it and applied brakes, but the car hit a road divider,” he said.

Inspector of Sarojininagar police station, PK Singh said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) van with the help of some locals rushed Nikhil to Lok Bandhu hospital where he was declared brought dead. He said the doctors suspected that an iron grill punctured his heart after breaking the car glasses when it hit the road divider.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Lucknow, Kalanidhi Naithani said that over speeding was a major cause of road accidents in the city as well as in other parts of the state and the country.

“Soon speed censors will be put up at regular distance of 100 meters on highways and main city roads under the integrated traffic management system programme to check over speeding,” he said, adding it would help curbing the road accidents caused due to over speeding. The car that met with the accident costs over ₹2 crore and had multiple security features.
