Ganga, Yamuna continue to rise

Nearly 5000 people have been affected in the city area and are camping in different flood relief centres

PRAYAGRAJ : Water level of the Ganga and the Yamuna continued to rise at the pace of .5 cm per hour on Saturday evening and was expected to reach the 86-metre mark in the next 24 hours.

According to reports made available by district flood monitoring cell, the level of the Ganga at Phaphamau was 85.77 metres while at Chatnag it was measured 85.06 metres. Similarly, the level of the Yamuna at Naini was 85.71 metres.

According to executive engineer, irrigation department (flood division) Brijesh Kumar, the water level of both rivers has been rising for the past over 10 days. He said the level continued to rise on Saturday also but at a decreased pace. “The water level in Hamirpur and Banda has started decreasing but here (in Prayagraj) it is still rising at 0.5 cm per hour. Presently every cm rise in water level means several houses are getting affected with each passing hour. As of now, nothing can be said and we are waiting for the water level of both the rivers to become stable,” he said. As per the official, water level of the twin rivers was rising to due to condition of the Ken, the Betua and the Chambal rivers .

As per an estimate, nearly 5000 people have been affected in the city area and are camping in different flood relief centres. As many as 71 villages of the district have also been affected by the flood water. According to ADM (finance and revenue), Prayagraj MP Singh, who is also nodal officer of flood monitoring and relief operations, the focus of district administra­tion was on relief work and no untoward incident had been reported in district due to floods so far.
