Close shave for 7 women as boat overturns in flooded Yamuna

PRAYAGRAJ : A group of women, who were returning to their village after offering prayers at a local temple, had a narrow escape when the small boat in which they were travelling overturned in flooded Yamuna near Gadwa village in Kaushambi district on Saturday.

However, boatmen present at the scene acted quickly and managed to save them all, said SDM Rakesh Chandra, who was one of the first officials to rush to the site after getting the informatio­n.

As per reports, a group of seven women hired a small boat to visit nearby Kala Mata temple in the morning. On their way back, the women in a bid to avoid branches of tree leaned on one side leading the boat to overturn. SDM Rakesh Chandra and DPRO Gopalji Ohja reached the site and instructed the boatmen to avoid using small boats in view of the flooded Yamuna and also urged the locals to travel only on big and safer boats.

8 DIE IN RAIN-RELATED INCIDENTS

LUCKNOW : At least eight people were killed in Uttar Pradesh in rain-related incidents, a senior official said on Saturday. All the deaths took place on September 20, Uttar Pradesh relief commission­er GS Priyadarsh­i said.“Eight persons lost their lives in different rain-related incidents in the state, while two sustained injuries,” he said in a statement issued here.

Owing to snakebite, one person each died in Pilibhit, Lalitpur and Kannauj Similary and two were killed in Etawah, he said. Two persons died due to lightning in Chitrakoot, while one person died due to lightning in Sonbhadra, the statement said.

He also informed that rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Betwa and Ghaghra were flowing above the danger mark at various places in the state.
