Won’t tolerate China trade ‘abuse’: Trump

- ■ letters@hindustantimes.com

UNITED NATIONS: President Donald Trump delivered a stinging rebuke to China’s trade practices at the United Nations General Assembly, saying he would not accept a “bad deal” in US-China trade negotiations.

Trump emphasised the need to correct structural economic abuses at the heart of the countries’ nearly 15-month-long trade war. He said Beijing had failed to keep promises that it made when China joined the WTO in 2001 and was engaging in predatory practices that had cost millions of jobs in the US and other countries.

Speaking of China’s “market barriers, heavy state subsidies, currency manipulation, and product dumping forced technology transfers”, Trump said, “as far as America is concerned, those days are over.”

UNITED NATIONS: US President Donald Trump put China on notice at the United Nations on Tuesday over its handling of the Hong Kong crisis, urging Beijing to protect the former British territory’s “democratic” way of life.

Trump told the UN General Assembly his administration was “carefully monitoring” pro-democracy protests that have sparked the gravest political crisis in the Asian financial hub since its handover from Britain to China in 1997.

“The world fully expects that the Chinese government will honour its binding treaty... (and) protect Hong Kong’s freedom and legal system and democratic ways of life,” he added.

“How China chooses to handle the situation will say a great deal about its role in the world and the future,” the Republican tycoon added during his third appearance at the diplomatic forum in New York.

US PRESIDENT ACCUSES IRAN OF ‘BLOOD LUST’

Trump denounced Iran’s “blood lust” and called on other nations to join the US to pressure Iran after attacks on Saudi oil facilities, but said there is a path to peace.

“America knows that while anyone can make war, only the most courageous can choose peace,” Trump said.

The September 14 attacks in Saudi Arabia, widely blamed on Iran, have raised concerns about a broader war.
