Deepak bags a golden double

LUCKNOW :It was a golden double for Deepak Nishad of Varanasi Zone on Friday at the 58th UP Police Annual Aquatics and Cross-Country Championsh­ip here as he emerged victorious in two different events.

Deepak first clocked 25:08.687 seconds to win the 1500m freestyle gold and then finished top in the 100m breast stroke event, clocking 01:25.38 secon-ds.

Ram Prakash Rana of Lucknow Zone, who had two gold medals on Thursday, completed his hat-trick of gold medals on Friday, finishing top in the 400m individual medley.

Naresh Kumar of West Zone stood top in the men’s cross country, before helping the side winning the team championsh­ip also. In the women’s section, Bareilly Zone’s Rajani emerged victorious in the individual category, whereas in the team championsh­ip Bareilly Zone also finished top.

KERALA IN FINAL

Spirited Kerala stormed into the final of the All India Electricit­y Board’s Tennis Tournament, defeating Tamil Nadu 2-0, at the Mini Stadium here on Friday. Suraj H beat Ganeshan 4-0, 4-0 in the first singles, before Beenu Mani beating jai Kumar in the second singles by 4-0, 4-1.

The second semi-final between hosts Uttar Pradesh and Punjab was stopped due to a heavy rain. Punjab’s Sanjeev Kumar put the side into lead, beating UP’s Alok Bhatnagar 4-2, 4-2, but the second singles between UP’s DA Tilak and Punjab’s Indrajeet was stopped due to rain.

CHESS CHAMPIONSH­IP

The Alumni Associatio­n of Students of Christ Church College, are organizing the 1st Christ Church College Prize Money District Chess Championsh­ip from October 18 to 20 here.

According to the organizing secretary, Ram Vyas the tournament would be played on round robin basis with seven rounds in three categories namely open, under 16 years and under 12. The event offers Rs 25000 as prize money.

OPEN CHESS

The 29th Sunday Open Chess Tournament will be held on October 20. The event carries a prize money of Rs 16,000. Players with less than 2000 FIDE ratings are eligible to participat­e in categories like under-16, under-10 and under-7.
