JAMMU: An officer of the Border Security Force (BSF) is suspected to have been washed away by a swollen rivulet along the International Border in RS Pura sector of Jammu district on Saturday evening while he was on patrol duty.

“The officer has been identified as 54-year-old sub-inspector Paritosh Mondal of 36 battalion of BSF, a native of West Bengal. The incident happened near Jai Kishan post. He was on a patrol duty along with two constables when he lost his balance and slipped into the swollen rivulet and thereafter he went missing,” said a senior BSF officer.

The officer informed that the incident occurred at around 7pm on Saturday. “The rivulet flows into Pakistan. We can’t say for sure if he was swept away to the other side [Pakistan] but we have taken up the matter with Pak Rangers. BSF, State Disaster Response Force and police have also launched searches to trace the officer,” he added.

The incident happened near the bank of a river, which is in spate due to heavy rains, near the Jaikishan post, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.
