LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said BJP leaders, who were now claiming great leaders as their own, had never actually followed them or their principles.

“BJP and its leaders have never walked on the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi and have never spoken the truth. They believe in violence but are still celebrating Gandhi’s birth anniversary today. They want to lay claim on great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Bhim Rao Ambedkar, Ram Manohar Lohia among others; it is nothing but a facade,” said Yadav after offering floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary in Lucknow. He also listened to favourite ‘bhajans’ of the Mahatma.“Not just Indians but the whole world is trying to follow in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi today. The country can only live in peace and prosperity when it follows the path shown by the Mahatma,” said Akhilesh. He said the BJP government in the state had pushed UP at the bottom of the growth table.

About Priyanka Gandhi’s yatra in Lucknow, he said, “People following the path of Gandhi is good for the country. It’s nice to see people trying to adopt Gandhi. But now they must adopt his ideology in their lives too.” On the SP’s loss in the Hamirpur bypoll, he said, “The day the administration and the EC become truly impartial, the SP will start winning the elections.”

On the cancellation of form of SP candidate in Ghosi, he said, “It was due to mistake of party office-bearers.”
