LUCKNOW : Two-time former champions Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday regained the Vinoo Mankad Trophy after a gap of five seasons, crushing mighty Mumbai by six wickets, at the Holkar Cricket Stadium at Indore. Having won the consecutive trophies in 2011-12 and 2012-13, Uttar Pradesh had a semi-final loss in the 2013-14 before losing in the quarterfinals last season. But on Tuesday, the Sameer Rizvi-led side overpowered the rivals in all departments to lay their hands on trophy for the third time.

Leading from the front, Rizvi slammed an unbeaten 92 in 90 balls with the help of eight fours and three sixes as Uttar Pradesh romped home in 43.5 overs, losing four wickets while chasing 196 in 50 overs.

With scoreboard reading 3/50 in 13.4 overs once, things looked a bit tough for UP, but both Rizvi and keeper-batsman Dhruv Chand Jurel (58, 97b, 4x4) stitched together 142-run for the fourth wicket to ensure team’s comprehensive win.

Opener Anchit Yadav (25, 26b, 4x4, 1x6) and Harsh Tyagi (17, 40b, 2x4) departed in quick succession, before Siddharth Yadav (0) edging a simple catch to Vedant Murkar off Dhanit Raut to see team struggling a bit at 3/50. But both Rizvi and Jurel didn’t lose hearts and kept stroking the ball nicely along the mat to make things easy for the side.

Earlier it didn’t work out Mumbai’s way after they chose to bat first after winning the toss. Seamer Kunal Tyagi had opener Suved Parkar (5) in the very second over, before fellow opener Divyansh Saxena (23, 35b, 5x4) and Pragnesh Kapnillewer (31, 45b, 5x4) steadying the innings, adding 52-run for the second wicket.

But things began changing quickly as soon as offie Rishabh Bansal came into action. The lanky bowler not put the break on rival batsmen, but also kept them dancing on his tunes, bagging 3/23 in 10 overs to see Mumbai scoring 195 in 48.5 overs. Atahrva Ankolekar (33, 46b, 1x4, 1x6) and Vaibhav Kalamkar (24, 38b, 2x4) though tried to adorn the innings down in the order, to no avail. Other bowlers Aaquib Khan, Kunal Tyagi and Anchit Yadav extended a good support to Bansal, sharing six wickets between them. BRIEF SCORES Mumbai 195 in 48.5 overs

UP LOSE THIRD GAME

Uttar Pradesh’s poor show in the men’s Under-12 One-Day Trophy continued even on Tuesday as they lost to Mumbai by 68 runs, at the Jaipuria Vidhyalaya Ground in Jaipur.

Needing 255 to win in reply, Uttar Pradesh could score 186 in 40.5 overs. After losing opener Rahul Singh (17) in the sixth over, Uttar Pradesh kept losing wickets on regular intervals. Karan Sharma hammered a fine 61-ball 54, which contained five hits to the fence and a six, but no avail. Shams Mulani remained the star bowler for Mumbai, bagging 4/21, whereas Saksham Jha, Shreyas Gurav and Aman Khan shared six wickets between them.
