Rohit, Yashvir bag golds for UP

LUCKNOW : Young thrower Rohit Yadav continued his good run in the domestic circuit, winning javelin throw gold in the boys under-20 category on the fourth day of the 35th National Junior Athletic Championsh­ips at Guntur on Tuesday.

Jaunpur’s Rohit, who had an under-18 national record throw of 81.75m in the boys preliminar­y round of the second Athletics Federation of India National Javelin Throw Open Championsh­ip in April this year at Sonipat, hurled the iron rod to distance of 78.68 metre.

At Sonipat, the 17-year-old had improved on the national record of the 79.29m for boys under-18 set by Mohammed Hadeesh Apia in September 2015.

Yadav had also recorded a throw of 79.83m in the SGFI National School Games in Nadiad, Gujarat, in February.

In Tuesday’s event, Yashvir Singh of Haryana and Nandkishor Singh of AFI finished second and third, respective­ly in javelin.

Uttar Pradesh had their second gold of the day in the boys under-16 category, when Sandeep Kumar crossed 1.92 metre to finish top in the high jump event. He was followed by Haryana’s Deepanshu (1.89m) and Kerala’s Bharath Raj B (1.89m).

The only silver medal in UP’s kitty on Tuesday was won by Tanvi Malik, who clocked 1:35.18 seconds to finish second in the 600m event in the girls under-14 category. Jharkhand’s Ashakiran Barla clocked 1:33.78 second to finish top, whereas Priyanka Madivalapp­a Olekar of Karnataka stood third.

Sanya Yadav in shot put and Rajat in long jump events bagged bronze medals for Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier, Rachna marked her shift from the single-lapper to the 800m with a memorable victory, breaking Tintu Luka’s 11-year-old under-20 girls’ meet record, with a 2:06.12 effort at the Acharya Nagarjuna University campus.
