Pratiksha sets new meet record

LUCKNOW:Uttar Pradesh athletes finished their campaign in the 35th National Junior Athletics Championsh­ips at the Acharya Nagarjuna University campus at Guntur on Wednesday on a high as young Pratiksha Patel set up a new meet record in girls under-16 javelin throw with a 43.08m effort, breaking the old mark of 41.24 set by Jyoti in 2017. Ramyashree Jain of Karnataka also went past Jyoti’s mark in taking second place with 41.33m in a fine duel with Pratiksha Patel.

Besides Pratiksha’s record breaking effort, Uttar Pradesh athletes also won three gold, one silver and a bronze medal on the final day of the five-day championsh­ip on Wednesday.

Mohammed Nur Hasan clocked 9:23.48 seconds to give UP’s their first gold of the day in the 3000 metre steeplecha­se event in the boys under-20. He was followed by Kerala’s Manoj Kumar M and Suhas Prabhakar Bankar of Maharashtr­a.

Sports Authority of India’s Varanasi trainee Rebi Pal too walked away with gold in the girls under-18 3000m steeplecha­se. She clocked 9:50.64 seconds to push Gujarat’s Drashtiben Pravinbhai Chaudhri and Supriti Kashyap of Jharkhand to the second and third spots, respective­ly.

Amit Chaudhary bagged the final gold for Uttar Pradesh ob Wednesday, finishing top in the boys under-16 2000m event, clocking 5:42.77 seconds. Tamil Nadu’s Walter Kandulna and Uttar Pradesh’s Dushyant bagged silver and bronze, respective­ly.

UP’s only silver medal came in the boys under-16 200m dash when Aman Khokar clocked 22.18 seconds to finish second. Haryana’s Kapil stood top, whereas Riday Samar Jana of Maharashtr­a finished third.

Earlier, Telangana’s G Maheshwari scripted the sole national record on the final day, winning the girls under-20 3000m steeplecha­se crown with a time of 10:34.10 that was 12.71 seconds faster than her previous best in the event.

Running a race of her own, with the competitor­s fighting for the second spot, Maheshwari easily secured the National Record that was pegged at 10:53.91 by Nandini Gupta in Lucknow in 2017 and the Meet Record that stood at 10:55.54 in Khushboo Gupta’s name since the Mangalagir­i meet in 2017.
