Teen prodigy brings out almond portrait series

-

LUCKNOW: Teen prodigy Aman Singh Gulati of Lakhimpur in Uttar Pradesh has put together a unique portrait series, ‘Soul of Sikhism’, to pay tribute to the tenth guru of Sikhs, Guru Govind Singh, his mother and four sons. What sets apart these portraits is that they’re all done on almonds -- a new category of micro paintings.

These special artworks were displayed at an event organised at the house of Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla in New Delhi on December 28.

“The cross-section of an almond has oily texture so normal paints don’t easily stick to it. That’s why I had to work out a unique technique to make the paintings,” said Aman who holds several international records and popularly goes by the name of ‘Almond Singh’.

Just a month ago, in November, this budding artist had helped Tirupati-based Kasturba Gandhi Kendra Trust (KGKT) win a place in the prestigious Guinness Book of Records by creating ‘the largest drawing by an individual of Mahatma Gandhi’. He completed the sketch on October 2 to commemorate Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

Speaking about his latest technique of creating artworks on almonds, Aman said, “This is a part of my next attempt to make it into the Guinness Book of Records. I am aiming to create the largest collection of miniature paintings. My application has already been accepted by the records organisation.”

In recognition of the work done by him for the good of the Sikh community, Aman has also been felicitated with the ‘Global Sikh People’s Choice Award’ by a group in England.

“These days, youths seek to follow western art and culture but right from my childhood, I wanted to explore and create something different. People are always attracted to new art techniques.”

The Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, California, is reportedly planning a short film on ‘Almond Singh’.
