LUCKNOW: After failing to dissuade the women protesters at Clock Tower, police and local administration have started identifying them and their family members.

Cops deployed at the protest site are taking help of local informants and even following some women or their family members back to their house for identification.

The peaceful protests by women which started on Friday night and grew bigger on Saturday have put the police on the back foot. “We didn’t expect the women to continue the protest throughout the night. We will allow the protest to continue till it remains peaceful. The identification is being done to mitigate involvement of any anti-social element in the protest,” said a senior police official.

While women were allowed to protest peacefully, police prevented men from reaching close to the protest site to ensure law and order in the area. Police even detained some men who tried to reach close to the protest site.

Assistant commissioner of -police (ACP) of Chowk Durga Prasad Tiwari said, “Around five men were detained briefly by police when they tried to reach close to the protest site forcefully. The men were released later. Some of the protesting women have also approached us asking to keep the men away.”

Besides local police, personnel from local intelligence and Intelligence Bureau(IB) also inspected the protest site. Additional police force and units of Rapid Action Force(RAF) stayed alert at a close distance.

No complaint or FIR was lodged with the police by the time this report was filed.
