UP government cancels ‘essentiality certificate’ of GCRG medical college
LUCKNOW: The medical education department, Uttar Pradesh, has withdrawn the essentiality certificate from the GCRG Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow.
The decision to withdraw the essentiality certificate from the institute was taken by the state government after the medical college failed to meet requisite standard to impart medical education and clinical expertise to its students as per the prescribed norms, said an official of the department.
Essentiality certificate could simply be understood as a recommendation of the state government to an organisation or a trust to run a medical college. The government had given its approval to the GCRG in September 2013.
Asked about the existing MBBS students in this college, director general, medical education, Dr KK Gupta said that the state government was planning to shift them to other medical colleges. “The process is in discussion on how to shift the existing MBBS students, if any, to other

colleges,” he said. The union ministry of health and family welfare had permitted admission on 150 MBBS seats by the college in 2016.
The decision to withdraw the certificate, according to an order of principal secretary (medical education), was taken after a committee headed by the DG, medical education, submitted its report to the department.
GCRG authorities were not available for comment.
