Educationist, Gandhian thinker Mohini Manglik passes away
LUCKNOW: Distinguished educationist, Gandhian thinker and a guru to a generation of Lucknow University students, Mohini Manglik passed away in a hospital here on Wednesday night. She was 95. She is survived by her son. As per her wish her last rites were performed at the electric crematorium in Lucknow on Thursday. Teachers, educationists, social workers and students expressed their grief on her demise.
“She was an institution of education and social values that are needed in the society these days,” said Ranu Uniyal, HoD, English and Modern European Languages in LU. A student of Mohini Manglik, Uniyal continues to cherish the time she spent as a student under her.
“She would encourage me to read and think about life. She imparted in us the ability to think and to be compassionate,” she added. Born in Karachi, Manglik was a student of IT College and later joined LU as a teacher. Beside her indepth knowledge of English and European history and culture, her students also remember her unforgettable charm and upward attitude.
“In a world where people are asked to be Machiavellian to get successful, ma’am taught us the that the best way to success was with right values,” said Meenakshi Pahwa of LU, who did her PhD under Mohini Manglik.
A devout humanist, Manglik followed the Gandhian principals her entire life. People close to her said that a meeting with the father of the nation left a lifelong impression on her.
“I was blessed to be her student. Last year she came with a scholar who needed to be explained some philosophical concept. It was such an honour. I lost my most loved teacher,” said Rakesh Chandra of the philosophy department.
Manglik continued her association with education even after retiring from LU in 1985. She was a member of the management committee of colleges and various social groups.
