LUCKNOW: Five people, including two former vice-chancellors and two registrars of Lucknow University, were booked for cheating and dishonesty in a 13-year-old case of appointment of a lecturer.

The FIR was lodged at Hasanganj police station on Sunday on the complaint of one Prashant Pandey.

Pandey alleged that one Kavita Chaturvedi was appointed on the post of lecturer on the basis of fake documents related to her qualification in 2007.

Pandey also applied for the same post and his application was declined. “Chaturvedi submitted fake document of her PhD qualification for the appointment procedure which was overlooked by the university administration and she was offered the post,” Pandey said.

“The appointment was done by the then VC RP Singh who headed the selection panel.”

RP Singh and the then registrar Anil Kumar Demle, Kavita Chaturvedi, Ex VC SP Singh and Registrar SK Shukla have been made accused in the FIR. Investigating Officer (IO) of the case Abhay Kumar Singh said the accused had been booked under section 420 (cheating and dishonesty), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record).

Chaturvedi’s appointment was cancelled by the governor in 2008 when Pandey submitted a complaint regarding it. But no further investigation was done on part of the Lucknow University administration. Pandey collected the documents regarding the appointment of Chaturvedi over the years through RTI (Right To Information).

He claimed that it took him years to collect the documents which were made basis in his police complaint. “Before approaching the police, I submitted a representation to the university in 2019 but no action was taken which suggest that the then VC and registrar tried to help her.” “The applications of many eligible candidates, including myself, were overlooked by the university to appoint a person who was not even eligible for the post. The decision had affected our lives gravely,” alleged Pandey.

Meanwhile, the accused in the matter denied their involvement in the case.

RP Singh, who was the then VC of the university, said, “The appointment was made by the selection committee. I as VC has no say in it,” adding that he was wrongly made accused in the case.

SP Singh, who was the VC between 2016 and 2019, said, “I was not the VC when the appointment was done. Prashant Pandey submitted a representation regarding the matter after which we sought a legal opinion on the matter. I am not aware about the development in the matter.”

“The complaint against me is fraudulent and has been lodged to harass me. The complainant Prashant Pandey has concealed information from police in the complaint. I have received relief from court in this matter,” said Kavita Chaturvedi.
