AGRA:Fatigue, worry and hunger are taking their toll on migrants fleeing cities to reach their villages following the lockdown to contain the spread of Covid-19. Many of them are trudging on foot as transportation is off the roads.

A man in his 30s, exhausted after walking for about 200 kilometres, complained of chest pain, collapsed and died after reaching here on Saturday morning. His body was sent for a post-mortem examination.

The man worked at a restaurant in Delhi which was shut due to the lockdown. Hence, Ranveer Singh (38) decided to return to his village in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh but could only walk till Agra before collapsing.

“Police received information on Saturday morning about a body lying near Kailash Turn

“Ranveer was accompanied by two others from Delhi and was walking towards his village in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh. On reaching Agra on Saturday morning, he complained of chest pain. So all three stopped on the outskirts of

Agra but Ranveer collapsed,” said Kumar.

“Police rushed to the spot but the man had died by then. So his body was sent for post mortem examination to ascertain the exact reason for his death,” the SSP said.

Those accompanying Ranveer Singh revealed that unemployment due to lockdown forced them to walk from Delhi till their village in Morena district in Madhya Pradesh. They reached Sikandra area in Agra after walking about 200 kilometres from Delhi but then Ranveer complained of chest pain.

A local shopkeeper helped the trio and Ranveer was asked to lie down and given tea and biscuits but he could not survive. He was a resident of Bad Ka Pura in Ambah area of Morena and had to walk 100 more km to reach his village.

Sikandra police station house officer Arvind Kumar said that ‘myocardial infarction’ was stated as the reason for the death of the man in post-mortem report. “These three had probably left Delhi in the wee hours of Friday and reached Agra on Saturday morning,” he said.

“The man died of heart attack probably caused because of exertion in walking to Agra from Delhi. The post-mortem examination was conducted on Saturday and the body was handed over to family members,” Arvind Kumar said.
