AGRA: Nearly 1,000 migrant workers blocked the Mathura-Agra highway in Raipura Jat area on Sunday afternoon and burnt waste material demanding that arrangements be made by the government to send them to their homes in different districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Later, officials from Mathura rushed to the spot and made arrangements for their journey.

After the Auraiya incident on Saturday when 24 labourers were killed after the truck they were travelling in collided with another vehicle, migrants walking, cycling and travelling in trucks were stopped in border areas of Agra and Mathura. The Mathura administration stationed them in Hardayal College and assured to provide buses for their transport.

The administration could arrange a dozen buses but the number of migrants was higher. The remaining labourers lost their patience, blocked the highway and burnt waste material in protest. On information, the police reached Raipura Jat area and pacified the labourers who were later allowed to move in trucks passing by. The highway was cleared later in the day.

“I began my journey on cycle with my wife, two children besides baggage. We were going to our home town Kannauj from Faridabad city in Haryana. The long journey till Mathura and hot weather took toll, but we were stopped at Mathura-Agra border on Saturday and asked to move back by the police” stated Bhoora, a labourer.
