State sees big spike with 208 fresh cases

LUCKNOW: The state reported another steep single-day spike in coronaviru­s infections on Sunday as 208 fresh cases took the Covid-19 tally to 4,464, according to official data.

The previous high of 203 cases was recorded on Saturday.

The number of deaths reached 112 with eight more fatalities.

With 195 patients discharged from different hospitals on Sunday, the overall number of cured patients went up to 2,636 and the number of active cases stood at 1716, said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal, state surveillan­ce officer. The recovery rate in the state is 59%. As many as 275 patients were discharged on Saturday, the highest number since the pandemic began.

Among the eight latest deaths, Meerut reported one (total 19), Kanpur two (total 8) and Aligarh five (total 8), according to the health department data.

“The elderly, children, pregnant women and those with poor immunity need to ensure they do not step out unless necessary,” said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, director, Healthcity Hospital.

According to health department data, all 75 districts have reported cases till now, including Agra (810), Lucknow (295), Ghaziabad (188), Noida (269), Kanpur (316), Prayagraj (42), Moradabad (159) and Varanasi (97). During the day, 42 districts reported fresh cases. The maximum 17 cases were from Pratapgarh, which now has 37 cases in all.

“With the state sustaining a high recovery rate, we need to ensure the lockdown is followed strictly to keep the number of new cases low,” said Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general, Associatio­n of Internatio­nal Doctors. Till now, 1,282 persons belonging to the Tablighi Jamaat, people related to them and those who came in contact with them, have tested positive, according to an official statement.
