LUCKNOW: The state witnessed the highest single-day surge in coronavirus infections on Tuesday as 323 fresh cases took the Covid-19 tally to 4,926, according to official data. The spike came to light a day after lockdown 4.0 came into effect with several restrictions being eased. The previous high of 208 cases was recorded on Sunday.

The death toll reached 123 with five more fatalities — one each from Meerut, Firozabad, Varanasi, Basti and Jalaun, according to the health department data.

With 135 patients discharged from different hospitals on Tuesday, the overall number of cured patients went up to 2,918 and the number of active cases stood at 1,885, said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal, state surveillance officer. The large spike in the coronavirus cases was witnessed in the districts known as migrant workers’ zone, including Basti (50), Fatehpur (14), Bulandshahar (14), Rampur (13) Kaushambi (12), Deoria (12), Rampur (13) Bahraich (11), Ghazipur (7) and Pratapgarh (7).

In Basti, 50 migrants, including a one-year-old-child, who had returned home from Mumbai and Pune on May 16, tested positive on Tuesday.

Confirming it, Basti district magistrate Ashutosh Niranjan said that with 50 new cases, the total number of coronavirus cases had risen to 104, out of which 74 were active cases in the district.

“So far, all these migrants were kept at quarantine centres in different places but now they would be admitted to Covid level 1 hospital for treatment. Their contacts are being traced,” the DM added. Among the fresh 50 cases, there are five children.

Earlier on March 31, Basti had reported UP’s first coronovirus fatality with the death of a 25year-old man.

In Ayodhya, 18 fresh coronavirus positive cases were reported on Tuesday, according to the district administration.

With this, the total count of positive cases in Ayodhya went up to 23.

The affected villages are being sealed and the district administration has isolated all those who tested positive. All migrant labourers arriving in Ayodhya by Shramik special trains and buses are subjected to thermal scanning and quarantined at Government Inter College.

The urban centres known as the industrial zones also added to the increase in the infection cases, including Noida (31), Aligarh (21), Agra (12), Lucknow (11) and Varanasi (11). There was some respite in Meerut, Kanpur and Ghaziabad. While as no case was reported in Meerut, only one fresh coronavirus case was reported in Kanpur. There were two fresh cases in Ghaziabad.

The recovery rate in the state is good as many as 135 patients were discharged on Tuesday, taking the tally of the discharged patients to 2,918 since the pandemic began, said a state health department officer.

In its guidelines for Lockdown 4.0, the state government has issued strict directions for implementation of the Covid protocol. People will have to cover their faces with a mask in public places or pay a fine.

Rules have been also issued for containment zones, hotspots and buffer zones.
