55-yr-old defeats corona despite diabetes, high BP
LUCKNOW: A 55-year-old man has defeated the coronavirus despite having diabetes and hypertension. He was discharged from King George’s Medical University (KGMU). Another patient with a head injury has tested negative for the coronavirus. Doctors plan his discharge too.
“Co-morbidity is a risk for coronavirus, but we have several cases now with different co-morbidity who got admitted for coronavirus and successfully completed the treatment. The majority were above 55 to 65 years of age,” said Dr D Himanshu, senior faculty, KGMU, who is treating coronavirus patients in the isolation ward. A day before, a man, who had been treated for esophageal cancer, was discharged after he overcame the Covid-19 disease. The coronavirus patients with comorbidity who received treatment at the isolation ward include those with diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, and pregnant women.
“The woman, who had delivered a child on May 14, was also coronavirus positive patient, but she is fine now and is being discharged,” said Dr Shiuli Rathore of the isolation ward. Till now, KGMU has discharged 42 out of 53 patients, she said. Doctors said co-morbidity remained a risk factor and hence such people needed extra precaution.
Asked what was the difference in treatment of a person with co-morbidity, Dr Himanshu said, “No different medicines, but a treating doctors has to go by individual symptoms. So, for a diabetic person, sugar has to be monitored in addition to the general condition, which is done also in a non-diabetic patient.”
