Red alert issued as heat goes extreme

NEWDELHI: The India Meteorolog­ical Department (IMD) issued on Sunday a red alert for heatwave conditions in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and parts of Rajasthan where maximum temperatur­es are expected to climb further on Monday and Tuesday.

People sweltered in these regions in a heatwave on Sunday, with the maximum temperatur­e hitting five degrees above normal for the second consecutiv­e day, and no respite forecast until at least May 28. The Safdarjung weather station recorded the maximum temperatur­e at 44.4 degrees Celsius. Authoritie­s sounded a red category alert for Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, west and east Rajasthan on May 25 and 26 for heatwave or severe heatwaves. South Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh reported heatwaves and Churu in west Rajasthan reported a severe heatwave on Sunday, with a maximum temperatur­e of 47.4°C.

The heat was worse in several other places, where the maximum temperatur­e rose above 46 degrees Celsius. Nagpur Sonegaon in the Vidarbha region recorded 46.2°C; Churu in Rajasthan 46.6°C, Akola in Maharashtr­a 46°C, according to the India Meteorolog­ical Department (IMD).

LUCKNOW : There is no respite in sight from the prevailing heat wave that has gripped the state from past several days, said an official from Lucknow meteorolog­ical centre on Sunday.

The met department has issued a warning that heat wave conditions is very likely to prevail for the next 24 hours as the weather is mostly dry over the state.

Prayagraj was hottest in the state with 46.3 degrees Celsius, Agra was 46, Jhansi 45.7, Banda 45.6, Kanpur and Orai 45.5, Aligarh 44.6 and Varanasi recorded 44 degree Celsius.

Lucknow recorded season’s hottest day at 43 degree Celsius which was three degrees above the normal, and minimum temperatur­e 28.5°C which was 3.3 degree Celsius above normal.

The forecast for Lucknow is clear sky with maximum and minimum temperatur­e ranging around 44 and 28 degrees Celsius respective­ly, weatherman said.
