BIGGEST ONE-DAY JUMP OF 502 CASES TAKES UP TALLY TO 9,733

Spike accounts for 5.17% of total cases logged till now; 12 more deaths reported

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh recorded its biggest singleday jump of 502 Covid-19 cases on Friday, taking the state’s tally to 9,733, according to state health department data.

Twelve more people afflicted with the disease died as the toll went up to 257, according to the same data. “The state has reported 257 deaths so far and the cause of death of all the coronaviru­s patients will be clear after an audit,” said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal, state surveillan­ce officer in the health department. The spike reported on Friday accounts for 5.17% of the total cases in the state, according to the health department data. Migrant workers constitute 27.9% of the total cases.

Among the fresh cases, 51 were reported from Gautambudh Nagar (Noida), 48 from Kanpur Nagar, 41 from Jaunpur, 19 each from Ghaziabad and Bijnor, 17 from Azamgarh and 16 each from Ghazipur and Lucknow among others, an official bulletin said.

The previous biggest single-day jump of 378 cases was reported on May 31. Uttar Pradesh had reported its first case on March 2 in Agra.

“The state government has made large-scale preparatio­ns to handle the influx of migrants from different states and augment treatment capacities,” said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal.

“There are 2,719 migrant workers who have tested positive till now. A total of 84,020 samples tested from among 1,28,083 inter-state migrants who are under surveillan­ce. The state government has made largescale preparatio­ns to handle the influx of migrants from different states and augment treatment capacities,” said Dr Vikasendu Agrawal.

Till now, 5,648 patients were discharged, including 209 on Friday. The number of active cases in Uttar Pradesh now stands at 3,828. The state conducted 14,054 tests in the last 24 hours, the health department said.

The overall number of tests stood at 3,30,663 on June 4 and 3,44,717 on June 5, it added.

Experts said rise in numbers was an indication that the focus on speedy recovery should increase.

“Along with identifyin­g cases, we need to focus on treatment for speedy recovery. This will keep the number of active cases low,” said Dr Sandip Kapoor, director of Healthcity hospital in Lucknow.

Principal secretary, health and family welfare, Amit Mohan Prasad said 4,765 coronaviru­s patients were admitted in isolation wards and 8,963 people who came in contact with those

infected were kept in quarantine facilities.

Additional chief secretary, home, Awanish Kumar Awasthi said the number of hotspots in the state increased to 1,658. Health teams surveyed 9.33 lakh houses and 51 lakh people residing in hotspots, he added.

According to health department data, all 75 districts of UP have reported Covid-19 cases till now, including Agra (928), Lucknow (442), Ghaziabad (384), Noida (609), Kanpur (466), Prayagraj (117), Moradabad (249) and Varanasi (219).
