Noted neurosurgeon passes away
LUCKNOW : Professor DK Chhabra, a doyen of neurosurgery, passed away in the critical care medicine department at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) on Tuesday morning.
He is survived by his wife Dr Apjit Kaur and son Dr Sarab Chhabra.
Dr Chhabra served King George’s Medical University (KGMU) from year 1974 to 1986. He joined SGPGIMS in 1986 and retired in year 2003.
Presently, he was associated with Vivekananda Hospital of Lucknow.
“He was on ventilator for the last few days. A wonderful teacher, an excellent surgeon and a very kind and compassionate human being, he was a true professional and a role model for all of us.
His mentorship was exemplary and he was always affectionate towards his students and patients,” said prof Sanjay Behari of neurosuregry department, SGPGIMS, who has also been his disciple.
Dr. Chhabra established three centers of neurosurgical excellence in Lucknow - KGMC, SGPGI and VPIMS. His low-cost innovation ‘Chhabra Shunt’ continues to provide an affordable therapeutic option to the masses.
A true ‘karamyogi’, he dealt with fellow beings at a very personal level engulfing everyone in his loving warmth.
He will be remembered for his mild mannerisms, eye for perfection, immense discipline and a fine taste for all things classic.
In Dr Chhabra’s demise, the medical fraternity has lost one of its finest, most dedicated and revered talents and society an invaluable asset.
He was responsible for bringing Japanese machines for diagnosis of neuro diseases in the state that changed the way surgery was performed earlier. He leaves behind a rich legacy of students who will continue his selfless and ethical service to humanity.
