Amid Covid surge, 80% hospital beds occupied in Lucknow

LUCKNOW: As many as 592 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Lucknow over the last four days and currently 80% of the beds for coronaviru­s patients in the city’s government-run hospitals are occupied, according to official data.

Lucknow recorded 165 fresh cases on Sunday, 202 on July 11, 140 on July 10 and 85 on July 9, according to official data.

At present, 1200 out of the 1500 beds in government hospitals in

Lucknow are occupied, according to chief medical officer Dr Narendra Agrawal.

In view of the current situation, the health department has initiated steps to increase the beds and at least double their number in the next few days.

About 4,000 more beds will be added by the next week, according to the authoritie­s.

Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences has 100 beds for Covid-19 patients and about 90 of them are occupied.

Lok Bandhu Hospital has 100 beds and 60 are occupied.

Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences has 100 beds for Covid-19 patients and about 90 of them are occupied.

Lohia institute spokespers­on Dr Srikesh Singh said, “We had made 100 beds as per the government directives. Now if more are required, we shall follow instructio­ns.”

Lok Bandhu Hospital has 100 beds and 60 are occupied.

“We have an expansion plan of 50 to 100 beds on the campus. If the number swells, we shall add more beds,” said Dr DS Negi, director, Lok Bandhu Hospital.

King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has 200 beds for Covid-19 patients and 70 of them are occupied. However, KGMU is planning to add 200 more beds by converting Rehabilita­tion and Artificial Limb Centre (RALC) building into a Covid-19 hospital.

Sanjay Gandhi Postgradua­te Institute of Medical Sciences has 200 beds for Covid-19 patients and 130 of these are occupied by patients.

SGPGIMS director Prof RK Dheeman has said, “We are admitting very serious patients as we are a level-3 hospital.”

Outlining the steps to increase the number of beds, Dr Narendra Agrawal, Lucknow’s chief medical officer, said, “A thousand beds are coming up at the Haj House and over 600 at private hospitals in the next couple of days. The target is to take the number of available beds to above 6,000 (in Lucknow).”

The places where additional beds are coming up include TS Misra Medical College, Awadh Shilp Gram, two engineerin­g colleges on Sitapur Road and five hotels in the city.

“The additional beds will be used to admit asymptomat­ic patients. Each one (place) will have a medical team that shall examine and transfer a patient to higher centre in case of medical need,” said Dr Agrawal.

Work has begun at Haj House to bring in beds while hostels/ classrooms at the engineerin­g colleges are being given the shape of wards.

“One patient on an average takes five to seven days to get treated. The need for beds will go up, mostly for those who are asymptomat­ic. Over 80% cases are asymptomat­ic,” said Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general, Associatio­n of Internatio­nal Doctors.
