UP sells 1.5L new vehicles in June; highest by any state
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the country’s number one state in the registration (sale) of new vehicles in June after the Covid-19 lockdown. But the sales figures are only half of what they were during the corresponding period last year.
The transport department, which gets a major share of its revenue from the registration of new vehicles, hopes the sales to pick up further in the months to come as economic activities get going.
“UP registered more than 1.5 lakh new vehicles in June and this number of vehicles sold in the Unlock-1 is higher than that of any other state in the country,” said Dheeraj Sahu, transport commissioner.
Tamil Nadu and Bihar were on a distant second and third position by selling around 1.10 lakh and 96,000 automobiles, respectively, as per data.
Data available with the transport department shows that as many 1,48,701 new non-transport/personal vehicles (four-wheelers and twowheelers) were sold in June, but this was less by 46.38% compared to the sales in June last year when 2,77,327 new cars and bikes were registered.
The registration of transport/commercial vehicles was recorded at 3,546 in June this year vis-à-vis 15,982 in June 2019, the drop being 77.81%.
Automobile sales resumed in May after more than two months of lockdown. But the sale of private and commercial vehicles was recorded at just 14,408 and 370, which was less by 92% and 97.98% respectively compared to the registration of new vehicles in May, 2019. “Postponement of engagements and weddings is one of the major reasons for dip in the demand for automobiles vis-à-vis the corresponding period last year. We hope the sales will pick up in the months to come and July trends are already encouraging,” said another transport official.
