LUCKNOW: King George’s Medical University (KGMU), which had been successfully treating serious Covid-19 patients through plasma therapy, on Tuesday supplied a unit of plasma to Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) for a patient admitted there.

First in the state to start the therapy for Covid-19 patients, the KGMU also saw two more cured Covid-19 patients donating plasma on Tuesday, taking total donations here to 40.

“The two donations were done by technician of the blood bank

Amarnath Verma and a dental technician Vijay Verma,” said Prof Tulika Chandra, head of department, transfusion medicine, KGMU.

These two staff had tested positive and were admitted to the KGMU for treatment. “They have completed the mandatory two-week isolation period before donating plasma,” said an official.

Till now, 25 patients have been administered donated plasma here, said Chandra.

Apart from Covid-19 patients admitted at the KGMU, those at BHU in Varanasi, SGPGI and Mayo hospital in Lucknow have also been provided plasma by the

KGMU.

Plasma therapy treats Covid-19 patients by using immunity developed by the treated patients, said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, director, Healthcity

‘GIVE ‘QUARANTINE LEAVE’ TO QUEEN MARY’S STAFF ALSO’

King George’s Medical University Employees Association has demanded that staff working at the Queen Mary’s hospital be provided quarantine leave at par with the staff working in other departments on the campus.

“A fresh order says staff will get quarantine leave only if they get infected while working at the hospital. How can a department assess whether a staff got infected at hospital, at home or elsewhere.

Hence we demand that such an order be repealed and leave should be sanctioned as per the rules made for all the departments,” said Pradip Gangwar, president of the association in a letter to the registrar on Tuesday.

The order is applicable only to sister-incharge, nurses resident doctors, third and fourth class employees but not on senior doctors/faculty.

“The staff members doing 14-day duty in holding areas are not bring provided seven days quarantine leave as per the rules,” said Gangwar.
