Come Independence Day and how patriotism takes over countrymen! One look at the tricolour being unfurled from the ramparts of Red Fort is sufficient to infuse nationalistic fervour in anyone. This expression, however, will now take the digital detour, as public has been barred from taking part in celebrations this year, in lieu of the Covid-19 crisis.

The Ministry of Home Affairs had issued guidelines, stating that it is imperative to maintain social distancing, wear masks, and ensure proper sanitisation. While these rules have brought some relief to Delhi Police, who is responsible for security at this high-profile event along with other agencies, it also comes with a new set of responsibilities.

“The work in terms of layers of security has reduced, but we need to be extra careful while allowing people inside. We’re ensuring six feet distance between two seats. There are around 1,500 people who’ll be participating in the celebrations; it is about one sixth of the total gathering that takes place every year,” says Rajeev Bhardwaj, Station House Officer of Kotwali.

Some security personnel involved in the event have been in quarantine since August 1, and marching contingents are also making sure they adhere to all norms.

This year, invitees to the event also include Covid-19 warriors, among others, and will be sanitised and screened at the venue. “All those screening the invitees will perform their duty in PPE kits. A team of doctors will also be available, in case of any emergency,” adds Monika Bhardwaj, DCP, North Delhi.
