LUCKNOW: Doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) successfully operated upon a minor boy who had suffered critical injuries after a 13-cm-long piece of roof tile pierced through his eyes and skull.

Eight-year-old Abhishek suffered the injuries when while playing in his house he slipped and fell on the roof tiles locally called Khaprail.

“A piece of tile penetrated the nose area, both eye sockets and caused fracture of the skull base to reach the brain. The incident occurred at his home in Jaunpur district. He was referred to us on August 8 and we constituted multi-disciplinary team for this complex surgery,” said Dr Divya Narain Upadhyaya, senior consultant plastic surgery at the KGMU.

Dr Upadhyaya said the kid was brought to the hospital with the piece of the tile piercing his face. The left eye was severely damaged and had to be removed.

“However, plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons and opthalmic surgeons in the 5-hour long surgery conducted on Tuesday, managed to save the right eye. The piece of tile was removed from both eye sockets and nose cavity without injuring the brain. The child is healthy and is recovering well,” said Dr Upadhyaya. Apart from Dr Upadhyaya, plastic surgery team had senior residents Dr Abhijat, Dr Sandesh and Dr Aakansh.

The neurosurgery team was led by prof Kshitij Srivastava and senior Resident Dr Navneet, while opthalmic team was lead by prof Apjit Kaur and senior resident Dr Shailaja and anesthesia team led by Dr Satish Verma. “It is a rare case of facial impalement after which the child has survived without any major disability,” said Dr Upadhyaya adding that the boy will be discharged from hospital soon.
