STEEPEST ONE-DAY SPIKE 5,898 new cases, 82 deaths; state has 6.25% of country’s corona cases and accounts for 5.2% of national death toll; 56.14% cases reported in August alone

Uttar Pradesh’s Covid-19 tally crossed the two lakh-mark as the steepest single-day spike of 5,898 fresh Covid-19 infection cases and 82 deaths were reported across the state in the last 24 hours, according to official data released on Wednesday. The tally of infection now stands at 2,03,028 and the death toll has reached 3,141. As many as 1,13,980 cases have been reported in August alone, which is 56.14% of the total. Of the 82 deaths, nine were reported from Gorakhpur, eight from Lucknow, six from Saharanpur, five from Maharajgan­j and four each from Kanpur, Varanasi and Moradabad.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh’s Covid-19 tally crossed the two lakhmark as the steepest single-day spike of 5,898 fresh Covid-19 infection cases and 82 deaths was reported across the state in the last 24 hours, according to official data released on Wednesday.

The tally of coronaviru­s infection cases in the state now stands at 2,03,028 and the death toll has reached 3,141. The state has 6.25% of India’s Covid-19 infection cases and accounts for 5.2% of the national death toll while having about 16% of the country’s population.

As many as 1,13,980 cases have been reported in August alone, which is 56.14% of the total.

According to official data, Lucknow reported the highest 759 cases in the last 24 hours. The state capital has logged 23,676 cases so far, the highest in the state. Gorakhpur reported 387 new cases, Kanpur 316, Prayagraj 293 and Varanasi 201.

Of the 82 deaths, nine were reported from Gorakhpur, eight from Lucknow, six from Saharanpur, five from Maharajgan­j and four each from Kanpur, Varanasi and Moradabad, a bulletin issued by the state health department said.

Till now, the maximum of 389 deaths have been reported from Kanpur, followed by 311 in Lucknow, 154 in Varanasi, 137 in Prayagraj, 130 in Meerut, 121 in Gorakhpur, 109 in Bareilly and 106 in Agra.

On an average, there were 1,140 new cases per day, according to analysis of the data.

The first one lakh cases in Uttar Pradesh came in 156 days (643 cases per day on an average) and the second lakh in just 22 days (1141 cases per day on an average). The tally of 2,03,028 cases was reached in 178 days.

“With 1,48,561 patients having recovered till now, the recovery rate now stands at 73.17% in Uttar Pradesh. During the day, 3,808 patients were discharged from different hospitals across the state,” said Dr Abhishek Shukla, secretary general, Associatio­n of Internatio­nal Doctors.

The state’s Covid-19 count was 1,92,382 on August 24. The tally reached 1,97,388 on August 25 and went up to 2,03,028 on August 26.
