Cong lambasts state govt over ‘poor’ law and order situation

- HT Correspondent letters@htlive.com :

LUCKNOW The Congress on Monday slammed the state government over the ‘poor’ law and order situation and said “the people of Uttar Pradesh do not want such ‘Ram Rajya’ of BJP in which murders and rapes are happening on an hourly basis.”

Addressing a press conference here, Congress national secretary and UP in-charge Dheeraj Gurjar, Congress Legislature Party Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’ and MLC Deepak Singh reiterated their demand for dismissal of the state government for being unable to improve the law and order situation.

Mishra said: “The last threeand-a-half years have made it clear that criminals have no fear of the government or police and the Kushinagar incident of mob lynching of a murder accused is a dangerous indication of people losing faith in the law and order system of the government.”

She further said: “This government came to power after making the ‘sushasan’ (good governance) promise to people. Is this their good governance and Ram Rajya in the state that now accounts for 11% of the total crime that happens in India? The government’s data tells that from January 1 to September 7 a total of 2,032 persons were murdered -- that is 291 murders per month or 10 per day. Similarly, in the same period, 1,216 rapes happened -- that is 174 rapes per

month or 7 per day. If this is BJP government’s Ram-Rajya, then people of the state don’t want it.”

Mishra also said that now the state has a new rape trend, which indicates that young girls are being kidnapped, raped and then murdered in a gruesome manner. Giving the example of two districts --Lakhimpur Kheri and Gorakhpur -- Mishra said: “From January to August this year a total of 51 rape incidents happened in Lakhimpur Kheri and of those three victims were murdered. Similarly, in Gorakhpur between the same time frame, 50 rapes happened.”

Gurjar said the BJP government has made Uttar Pradesh “the apradh Pradesh (crime state). He said: “Even if threetime MLA Nirvendra Kumar has died of a heart-attack (in medical terms), it still is a murder. If a heart patient is beaten up and then he dies of heart attack, it’s a murder. And they were beaten up -- he and his son.”

Deepak Singh said the Congress demands dismissal of the government and it will fight for the people of the state from the streets to the legislature.
