LUCKNOW: An angry mob lynched a 25-year-old man at a village in eastern Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district on Monday, apparently in the presence of policemen who had arrived after he allegedly shot dead a teacher.

A video clip on social media showed policemen present at the scene but unable to stop people from raining blows with sticks on the man lying on the ground.

The station house officer of Taryasujan police station, under whose jurisdiction the two incidents took place, was suspended and a probe was ordered against the errant policemen, an official said. The motive for the murder of the teacher was yet to be established.

Superintendent of police (Kushinagar) Vinod Kumar Mishra said, “Taryasujan SHO Harendra Mishra has been suspended and a probe committee has been constituted against him and other policemen of the police station for not being able to protect the accused. Action will be taken after the report.”

Mishra also said, “The incident occurred at Rampur Bagra village under Taryasujan police station. The accused was beaten severely by a violent mob before he could be rescued by the police team that reached there. The team took him to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.”

When asked about the video clip, the police said ‘all angles’ will be taken care of during the probe.

According to the police, the man reached the house of one Sudhir Singh on a scooter at around 8am and claimed to be a friend of Sudhir’s elder brother. Sudhir Kumar Singh, 28, was teaching in a junior high school (class 6 to class 8) in Bihar.

The man was asked to wait inside the house by family members as Sudhir Singh was taking a bath at that time.

“He waited for him (Singh) and had tea. As soon as Singh came out, he shot him dead,” the SP said. Hearing the cries of women, some villagers gathered there but the accused went to the terrace of the house and continued firing, the SP added.
