LUCKNOW: A 23-year-old youth from Rae Bareli lost his life after sharing bank account details and ATM password with his cousin, as the latter strangled him to death to get his bank balance of Rs 20 lakh, said police on Thursday. The youth Farman alias Shalu, had recently returned from Saudi Arabia, where he worked as a tailor. Police said the motive and sequence of events were revealed after arrest of the victim’s cousin and his friend involved in the crime on Wednesday.

Superintendent of police (SP), Rae Bareli, Shlok Kumar said the murder was cracked within 24 hours as the killers, who were desperate to get the money, withdrew ₹1.78 lakh from the victim’s account using his debit card. They said the withdrawn amount and the victim’s ATM card had been recovered from the two killers, including Shalu’s cousin Arbaz, 21 and his friend Kalpnath, 22.

Inspector JP Yadav, investigation officer of the case, said Shalu was employed as a tailor in Saudi Arabia for the past four years and earned good money with his hard work. He said the victim had returned home a few weeks ago and was staying at his parental house in Rasool ka Purwa locality under Deeh police station. Yadav said Shalu took his cousin Arbaz with him to purchase a new motorcycle on Monday. The victim handed over his debit card and shared password with Arbaz, asking him to withdraw some more amount when he fell short of the total amount needed for the new bike.

“While withdrawing the money, Arbaz scanned the bank account’s details and came to know that over ₹20 lakh were deposited in it. A criminal conspiracy surfaced in Arbaz’s mind immediately after getting this crucial information. He hatched the murder plot with his friend and invited the victim for beer on Tuesday. After making the victim drunk, the duo strangled him to death and disposed of the body in a pond near his house,” Yadav said.
