LUCKNOW : UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday welcomed the Farmers’ Produce and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, saying the new laws would bring widespread positive changes in the farm sector.

Terming them as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘historic and novel’ step, he said the new laws were in the interest of the agriculture sector and would multiply the income of farmers.

“Now, farmers will be unshackled from legal compulsions to sell their produce to mandis and private investment in the agriculture will create new jobs, leading to structural changes to the benefit of farmers,” the CM said.

Terming some opposition parties’ statements against the Bills as ‘misleading’, he said the government was committed to protecting interests of farmers and urged them not to allow themselves to be misled by some parties that did not want them (farmers) to prosper.

“These parties treated farmers merely as a vote bank during the last 60 years,” he said.

Enumerating steps taken by his government for the welfare of farmers, the CM said the government made 45 varieties of vegetables and fruits free from mandi fee during the lockdown.

“This has helped farmers get better price due to they being able to sell the produce anywhere,” the CM pointed out.

He said 126.36 lakh MT of sugar had been produced by crushing 1118 lakh MT sugarcane through 119 sugar mills that were run at full capacity. Similarly, Mandi Parishad and State Warehousing Corporation were jointly establishing godowns of 5,000 MT capacities each in 37 mandi compounds. He said farmers’ stored produce would be treated as security deposit. The government, he said, had also decided to set up mango houses – one each in Varansi and Amroha. There was a proposal to set up a ripening chamber of 20 MT and a cold chamber of 10 MT with investment Rs 3 crore each during 2020-21, added the CM. The CM said the government would soon bring a Farmer Producers’ Organisation policy to turn willing farmers into entrepreneurs. He said the government was committed to continuing the minimum support price policy for farmers.
