LUCKNOW: Heart never sleeps, it keeps on working even when you are sleeping. It keeps on supplying oxygen and nutrients to your body, that’s why you have to take care of heart, to remain fit, said Dr Nakul Sinha, interventional cardiologist of Medanta Hospital, in a talk show ‘Dil se Dil Ka khayal’ on Wednesday.

During the talk, he stressed on remaining alert to the health of heart.

The Heart Rate

“The normal heart rate of an average adult is 60 to 100 per minute. It is wrong to say that the heart rate should be around 72 every time because our activities keep changing throughout the day,” he said

Heart risk factors

He said one must know what the risk factors for the heart are.

There are non-modifiable risk factors like age or diabetes or high blood pressure (BP) which can be controlled with medicine.

Smokers and Drinkers

He said those who consume tobacco and alcohol are set to get heart disease more than those who don’t use these things.

He said tobacco and alcohol come under modifiable risk factors so smoking, chewing tobacco, khaini, pan masala and alcohol could hasten coronary artery disease (CAD).”

Alcohol in lesser quantities doesn’t damage the heart as is seen in Western countries, but in India, studies suggest that alcohol affects the heart even in small quantities due to peculiar genetic make-up.

People who are obese, people taking the wrong diet , people with wrong diet pattern, keeping away fruits, not doing any exercise, are susceptible to CAD.
