Awadh Bar Assn takes calendar route to salute legal luminaries
LUCKNOW: With the aim of instilling a sense of pride among budding lawyers, the Awadh Bar Association has got a table calendar prepared that has photographs of 12 distinguished lawyers who are a source of inspiration for many a young law professional.
To be released on January 12, the calendar has pictures of stalwarts like Pt Gokaran Nath Mishra, AP Sen, Chaodhary Niyamatullah, RF Bahadur Ji, Moti Lal Tilhari, Har Govind Dayal Srivastava “Babu Ji”, Pt Shri Dhar Mishra, Pt Jagat Narain Mulla, Robin Mitra, RN Trivedi, Gulam Hasan and George Jackson. The calendar gives a snapshot of their achievements as well.
Sharad Pathak, general secretary of Awadh Bar Association said, “It is a salutation on our part to the gems of lawyers who earned name and fame for themselves and brought laurels to the profession they were part of.”
Born in 1871, Pt Gokaran Nath Mishra was the president of the Bar and member of the Legislative Council of United Provinces. He was instrumental in enactment of Oudh Courts Act which paved way for the establishment of Chief Court of Oudh which had the status of a high court, says the calendar.
Apart from being a legal luminary, AP Sen was also a great Bangla poet and musician. Chaudhary Niyamatullah was the judge of the Allahabad High Court 1932-37; RF Bahadur Ji worked as defence cousel for freedom fighters at the trial of INA officers in 1946 on the request of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru and Moti Lal Tilhari was another seasoned senior advocate.
Likewise, Har Govind Dayal Srivastava played a key role as president of the Bar and led the movement for stabilising the territorial jurisdiction of the high court of Lucknow. Pt Shri Dhar Mishra was another respected lawyer of his times whereas Pt Jagat Narain Mulla was the prosecution counsel in the Kakori case trial and a member of Rowlatt Commission in Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. His searching question to Gen Dyer in the enquiry was appreciated by Mahatma Gandhi.
Senior advocate Robin Mitra participated in the freedom struggle through Prabhat Pheris and street plays. He was elected as the general secretary and later as president of Lucknow University Students’ Union while RN Trivedi was advocate general between 1994-95 and Gulam Hasan was elevated as a high court judge and later also served as a Supreme Court judge. Likewise, George Jackson was the first president of Oudh Bar Association, according to the calendar.
