Portal for online booking of high security registration plates ready
With the Society of Indian Mobile Manufacturers (SIAM) having developed countrywide portal for the online booking of high-security registration plates (HSRPs) for vehicles, the Uttar Pradesh government is now planning to issue a revised order very soon fixing a fresh deadline for mandatory affixation of these tamper-proof plates in all the vehicles registered prior to April 2019.
UP had to withdraw its earlier order on the HSRP in mid-December when there became a chaos due to the owners rushing to buy plates to meet the deadline to avoid the heavy fines on the one hand and the automobile dealers failing to handle the rush on the other. The transport department had then declared that the order was put on hold and a fresh deadline would be issued after a proper system of online booking was put in place.
“Now, since the SIAM has developed a portal using which people can book a HSRP for their vehicle as per their convenience, we will soon issue new rules to make the use of these plates mandatory,” transport commissioner Dheeraj Sahu said. “We expect the government to issue a GO any day fixing a fresh deadline and laying down new guidelines for installing HSRPs in all the vehicles,” he added.
The SIAM is a non-profit apex national body representing all major vehicle and vehicular engine manufacturers in India and provides a window to the automobile industry and works closely with stakeholders in formulation of the economic and commercial policies, regulations and standards relating to automobiles.
“The SIAM has provided a common platform where people can make an online booking of a HSRP for their vehicle by entering their name, vehicle name, its make, registration number and paying the cost that will be displayed on the portal,” Sahu explained. He said applicants could chose the date suited to them and also select the automo
bile dealer where they want to buy the plate from anywhere in the state.
As per the rules that had been waiting execution for last more than a decade, all motor vehicles in the country need a HSRP and in case of a vehicle with a windscreen, a colour-coded sticker is also required needed.
HSRPs are aluminum plates with a hologram and a laserbased permanent identification number that cannot be copied.
UP and many other states’ bid to suppliers of HSRPs failed after the tenders they invited for the purpose landed in controversies each time after which the Central government decided to authorize automobile dealers to provide such plates to all the old vehicles while the new ones after April 2019 coming with such plates only.
