LUCKNOW : The main shooter in the murder of Ajit Singh, an aide of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was arrested by Delhi police with a 9mm pistol, Lucknow police officials said on Monday.

They said Girdhari Sharma, the main shooter in the Vibhuti Khand shootout of January 6, was arrested near Shahbad dairy area of Delhi.

The officials said it seemed to be stage managed arrest due to pressure of Lucknow police. A Rs 1 lakh reward had been announced for his arrest.

The deceased Ajit Singh was husband of a former block pramukh of Gahona, in Mau district’s Mahmudabad. Ajit was a key witness in the murder of former MLA Simpu Singh.

Ajit Singh was travelling in a SUV which was sprayed with bullets by motorcycle borne assailants on January 6.

As many as 21 bullets hit Ajit, four of which were found inside his body during the post mortem examinatio­n.

Two doctors, who treated an injured shooter on the ex-MP’s behest, nabbed LUCKNOW : The Lucknow police tightened the noose around a former MP (also a mafioso) after two doctors, who treated an injured shooter involved in the Vibhuti Khand shootout on his behest, landed in police net on Sunday night, police sources privy to the developmen­t said here on Monday.

The cops said the former MP disappeare­d from his house in eastern Uttar Pradesh on Sunday after coming to know that police had taken the doctors into custody and were quizzing them.

They said one of the four shooters involved in the shootout had suffered gunshot injuries near his left rib during retaliator­y firing by deceased Ajit Singh’s accomplice Mohar Singh. Ajit Singh, an alleged henchman of gangster-turnedpoli­tician Mukhtar Ansari, was killed after suffering 21 gunshots when the four assailants opened indiscrimi­nate fire on him near Kathauta crossing, in Vibhuti Khand, here on January 6. Mohar Singh also suffered gunshot injuries on his leg.

A senior police official said they have found substantia­l evidence about the former MP’s involvemen­t in the shootout. “On the former MP’s direction, two doctors, including one in Lucknow and another in Sultanpur district, had treated the injured shooter,” the official said.

He said the former MP’s aide Vipul Kumar Singh had taken the Lucknow doctor to a flat in Gomti Nagar extension here to treat the injured shooter immediatel­y after the shootout. He further said the shooter was taken to a renowned hospital in Sultanpur’s Gomti Nagar later in the night and was admitted there at around 5.18 am on January 7.

The official said the shooter was treated there for two days (Thursday and Friday) and shifted to an unidentifi­ed location on Saturday morning.

He said CCTV footage of the Sultanpur hospital shows the former MP’s aide accompanyi­ng the injured shooter. He said the two doctors and the brother of the former MP’s aide have been taken into custody. “The two doctors are likely to made accused in the case for giving patronage to the criminals,” he added.

The Lucknow police have also arrested two persons -- Prince and Rehan -- for helping the suspected shooters. Police said Prince brought the shooters to Lucknow from Azamgarh in a car on January 6 while Rehan took the two shooters to Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh in his car after the incident on January 7. The two cars used to facilitate the shooters have been recovered.

Former MP’s involvemen­t

A senior police official said the mobile phone of the former MP’s aide has been recovered from his brother and it has evidence to show his (the former MP) direct involvemen­t in the incident.
