Union min injured, wife killed in accident

Union minister of state for AYUSH and MoS defence Shripad Naik was seriously injured after his car overturned in an accident near Hosakambi village in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka on Monday. His wife Vijaya Naik and his personal assistant Deepak Dhume -- who were travelling with him, succumbed to their injuries after the accident that occurred while they were returning to Gokarna from Yellapur in the state. The minister is being shifted to a hospital in Goa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant and asked the CM to ensure proper arrangemen­ts for treatment. Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurapp­a expressed shock and condoled the death of Vijaya Naik. He said that the district administra­tion and local police have been given instructio­ns to ensure that all assistance be provided to the family. Naik, a senior BJP leader from Goa, is a five-time MP from the North Goa.

BENGALURU : Union minister of state for Ayush (Auyurveda, Yoga and Naturopath­y, Unani and Homeopathy) and for defence, Shripad Y Naik, was severely injured and his wife Vijaya Naik and personal assistant were killed when their car overturned in Ankola Taluk of Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district on Monday night, police said.

According to the police, Naik was on the Yellapur- Gokarana road after offering prayers at Yellapur’s famous Gante Ganesha (Bell Ganesha) temple and was heading towards the Mahabalesh­war temple in Gokarna, when the driver lost his control

over the car and the vehicle overturned.

His wife Vijaya Naik, 55, and assistant Deepak Dubey died at the Ankola government hospital.

Other passengers in the car have been identified as gunman Tukaram Patel, Saikiran Shetia and the vehicle was being driven by Suraj Naik. The minister and three others injured have been shifted to a hospital in Goa.

“It was not a collision between vehicles. Prima facie it appears to be the case of the driver losing control of the car,” a police officer said. The Ankola police have registered a case in this regard.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to ensure proper medical treatment for the minister, sources said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Chief Minister Sawant and enquired about the condition of the Union minister.

“I am shocked and extremely saddened by the news of the Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik being injured in a road accident. I have had a conversati­on with the Chief Minister of Goa Shri Pramod Sawant.
