Road mishaps claim 65 lives in UP every day: CM
Stay alert, be aware of traffic rules and follow them, Yogi urges people
LUCKNOW : Chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday expressed concern over road accidents and made a fervent appeal to the people of the state to follow all traffic rules.
“On an average, 65 people die in road accidents each day,” he said.
“Drunken driving, using mobile phone while driving, over-speeding, not wearing a seat belt and similar small mistakes result in road accidents and the entire family has to pay for the mistake of a single person,” said Yogi who launched the month-long road safety awareness campaign from his official residence on Thursday.
Insisting on keeping vigil while driving or traversing through the roads, the CM said all that’s required was to stay alert, vigilant, and be aware of traffic rules and follow them.
“Poor road engineering, over-speeding and illegal cuts on expressways are also a big cause of road accidents. The departments concerned should pay special attention to these lags and this special campaign has been organised to spread
awareness amongst people in the initial days. Later, those flouting traffic rules will be penalised,” asserted the CM.
Emphasising on spreading awareness among school children during the road safety month, the CM said sense of traffic awareness and road safety should be instilled in them from the very beginning. Special programmes should be held in schools regarding road safety and traffic rules, he added.
Yogi directed to have a nodal officer deployed in every district
during the month, the qualification of the person concerned should be checked properly by authorities before issuing a driving licence to him/ her. The CM also expressed hope that the campaign would help a lot in preventing road accidents.
He also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various projects of the transport department worth Rs 55.70 crore. These included the construction of bus stations, automatic driving tracks, renovation works, etc, in different districts
of the state.
Ashok Katariya, minister, transport (independent charge), said: “In the total road accident deaths in the country, every seventh person is of UP. Keeping this is in mind, continuous efforts are being made to create awareness among people about road safety and traffic rules.”
An awareness rally was also flagged off by the CM. The pink patrol, emergency vehicles, LED vans, vintage vehicles and the transport department also participated in it.
