Cold wave conditions in northwest India
Many parts of northwest India were in the grip of cold wave conditions on Thursday as an approaching western disturbance prepared to make itself felt in the Himalayas and forebode a dip in temperatures over the plains, the IMD said. The minimum temperatures in Hisar (Haryana) dropped to 2.2 degrees C; the Safdarjung observatory, which provides representative weather data for New Delhi, recorded 3.8 degrees C; Kota (Rajasthan) 6.9 degrees C; and Bahraich (UP) 5 degrees C. Cold, dry northwesterly winds are blowing over the northern plains and adjoining parts of central India, IMD said. Under its influence, cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely in some pockets of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during the next 2-3 days. Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and UP in the next two days.
LUCKNOW : The state continued to reel under cold wave conditions with Lucknow recording a minimum temperature of 5.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday which was 3.1 degrees below normal. With overcast conditions for most part of the day the maximum temperature also hovered around 16.6 degrees Celsius, which was 7.6 degrees lower than the normal.
Dense fog enveloped the city causing fluctuation in temperature. As per Met department forecast, Lucknow will experience similar weather conditions on Friday with minimum temperature staying around 5
degrees Celsius and maximum around 17 degrees. Moderate to dense fog is very likely to remain across Lucknow in the morning. It will clear around the afternoon.
The MET department has sounded alert of very dense fog accompanied by severe cold wave to be expected in some parts of the state in the next 24 hours. Light showers are also expected in some parts of western UP. The lowest minimum temperature of 0.6 degrees Celsius, 0.3 degrees below normal was recorded at Churk while it varied at other places like Hamirpur (5.2), Muzzafarnagar (6), Agra (5.5), Meerut (5.5), Faizabad (3.5), Barabanki (6), Kanpur (7.8) and Varanasi (5) degrees.
