LUCKNOW : A 55-year-old Class IV nutrition worker died hours after being administered the Covid vaccine in Pilibhit district of western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. Government officials claimed that he died due to complications related to heart ailment.
The deceased, Pratap Ram, was employed with the child welfare and nutrition department in Amaria block of Pilibhit.
On Thursday, he went to the hospital and was administered Covishield dose at a community health centre (CHC) during the third round of vaccination, said Seema Agarwal, chief medical officer, Pilibhit.
This was the second death in UP in recent time. Earlier this month, a health worker had died a day after getting the jab in Moradabad district.
Ram didn’t experience any discomfort after the vaccination and returned to his office. “His condition deteriorated when he returned home around 6pm. We rushed him to the government hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” said Dinesh Ram, Pratap’s cousin.
The chief medical officer said: “Pratap Ram had a pre-existing heart ailment and had also undergone a heart surgery. His death was caused due to heart ailment, as per the post-mortem investigation conducted today.” Pratap Ram’s heart was found to be enlarged with blockage, added the CMO.
“The detailed post-mortem report of Pratap Ram has been sent to the district magistrate for further action,” the CMO added.
A total of 2024 people were administered the Covid vaccine in Pilibhit in the third round of vaccination on Thursday. Almost all those who got the shot were healthy with a few experiencing minor discomfort, said the CMO.
On January 17, a 46-year-old health worker, Mahipal, had died in Moradabad a day after receiving the Covid vaccination. His death was also attributed to cardio-pulmonary disease in the post-mortem report.
