LUCKNOW : Adding another issue to their fight for appellate tribunal of the goods and services tax (GST), lawyers of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court want jurisdiction of the bench to be increased by adding more districts, especially from western Uttar Pradesh.

The Awadh Bar Association (ABA) of the Lucknow high court has resolutions passed by lawyers’ associations of various districts demanding their jurisdiction to be shifted from the Allahabad high court to its Lucknow bench.

“The state government must remove all legal hurdles for setting up appellate tribunal of the GST in the state capital,” said HGS Parihar, president, Awadh Bar Association.

“We also want jurisdiction of the Lucknow high court to be increased. Lawyers’ associations of several districts have already passed a resolution demanding change in their jurisdiction from Allahabad to Lucknow high court,” added Parihar.

Lawyers’ associations of Budaun, Rampur, Kanpur, Moradabad and Shahjahanpur among other districts have sent their resolutions to the Awadh Bar Association demanding change in jurisdiction from Allahabad (now Prayagraj) to Lucknow.

“For reaching Allahabad from Budaun, we have to cross Lucknow. This is time consuming and financially not viable for both lawyers and clients of Budaun,” said lawyer Manoj Mohan Varma of Budaun district court.

“The District Bar Association of Budaun has already passed a resolution in favour of change in jurisdiction of the district from Allahabad to Lucknow,” added Varma and another Buduan lawyer Chandra Kant Singh Chauhan.

“The District Bar Association of Budaun is in constant touch with the Awadh Bar Association of the Lucknow high court on the issue,” they added.

Lawyers of Allahabad high court and its Lucknow bench abstained from judicial work on Thursday demanding main branch of the GST tribunal in their respective districts.

The lawyers will abstain from judicial work to press for their demand on Friday as well.
