PRAYAGRAJ: At a time when large number of people are succumbing to Covid-19 infection, an octogenarian couple from Sangam city has successfully defeated Covid-19 in home isolation by strictly adhering to doctor’s advice and keeping a positive attitude.

Retired director general (medical education and health), UP and founder vice-chancellor of Swami Vivekananda Subharti University, Meerut Dr VB Sahai, 86, and his wife Rachna Sahai, 85, tested positive for Covid-19 on April 15 and April 17 respectively but managed to recover and tested negative within 14 days sans any hospitalization or need for administration of oxygen at home. “I tested positive for Covids-19 on April 15 and within two days my wife too tested positive. We immediately went into isolation at our home removing ourselves from physical contact with every family member and started following the prescribed regimen for positive patients,” said Dr VB Sahai. Dr Sahai and his wife reside with their son, Dr Rishi Sahai, Covid-19 nodal officer of Prayagraj at their Alopibagh residence along with daughter-in-law Dr Anjula Sahai and 14-year-old grandson Harshvardhan.

“We remained positive all through the phase and never allowed ourselves to feel dejected. The patience, due care and precautions regarding medicines and diet etc. all paid off and we both recovered in two weeks’ time and are doing well, he shared.

Dr Sahai said that on the fifth day of the infection he did feel some difficulty in breathing but his own medical knowledge and that of his son and daughter-inlaw helped.

“I kept a tight watch on mine and my wife’s oxygen levels through pulse oximeter and by 10th day felt greatly relieved,” he added while sharing that he spent his time in isolation doing breathing exercises, reading books and resting.

Dr Rishi Sahai said that he and his wife tried their best to look after the two elderly members of the family ensuring timely food and medicines besides helping keep a positive outlook.

“I am glad that both of them have recovered. I am proud as all through the infection phase, both my parents remained very

positive and I feel that this is one aspect that needs to be stressed besides taking care of medicines, diet etc. for any Covid-19 positive patient,” Dr Rishi Sahai added.
