Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday obtained details of the Covid-19 situation from Bareilly district magistrate Nitish Kumar during a virtual meeting.

During the six-minute interaction, Kumar informed PM how the positivity rate had presented a big challenge but was brought down with the cooperation of all.

The PM was interacting via video conference with select district officials of various states. The district magistrates of Ghaziabad, Siddharthnagar, Gautam Buddha Nagar and Moradabad were also present at the virtual meeting. PM Modi cautioned all DMs about the wastage of Covid vaccines and the anticipated third wave. “In UP, PM spoke to Bareilly DM and enquired about the number of Covid-19 tests being conducted,” those aware of the development said.

An official spokesman said Kumar informed the PM about an increase in the number of Covid-19 tests in Bareilly. To a question from PM, Kumar told him 7000 tests per day were being conducted in Bareilly now against 400 tests conducted on March 4, 2021, said the spokesman. The Bareilly DM highlighted the measures which the administration had initiated well in advance to tackle the anticipated Covid-19 third wave.

“Our preparation is being done in three phases. In the first phase, we have established dedicated beds in three medical colleges for children. All the beds would have round the clock oxygen supply. In the second phase, the beds would be allocated at the district hospital. In third phase, a team of paediatricians would be prepared to handle the cases,” the DM said.

In response to another query regarding the anti-Covid measures initiated so far, Kumar mentioned the drive “Mera Gaon Mera Abhiyaan” which he initiated to keep a check on the Covid-19 outbreak in the rural pockets of the district.

Kumar also informed PM that more than 68% to 70% villages in the district were not affected by Covid-19. He also said 75% ambulances in Bareilly were reserved for Covid-19 patients.

Later, in a tweet, the PM said, “Earlier today, had an extensive interaction with District Officers from various states. These officers are tirelessly working on the field to strengthen the fight against COVID-19.”
