LUCKNOW : A dreaded shooter of notorious jailed gangster Khan Mubarak’s gang was gunned down in an encounter with UP police’s special task force (STF) in Gorakhpur on Sunday, said senior STF officials.

They said the slain criminal was wanted in sensational murder of a local Bahujan Samaj Party leader Jugram Mehndi and his driver in Ambedkar Nagar district over two years ago and carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head.

Additional director general (ADG), UP STF, Amitabh Yash said the criminal identified as Parvez, 42, had amassed huge wealth by committing multiple crimes in the past some years.

The ADG said Parvez was gunned down by a team led by deputy SP DK Shahi in an encounter when he opened fire on police team near Chilutal locality under Pipiganj police station limits of Gorakhpur.

He said Parvez was absconding since his name surfaced in the murder of Mehndi and his driver Sunit Yadav in an indiscriminate firing on a motorcade in Hanswar area of Ambedkar Nagar on October 15, 2018.

In the shootout, two others had sustained injuries and an FIR of murder, attempt to murder and other charges was lodged in the matter with Hanswar police station, he added.

He said a reward of ₹25,000 was declared on his arrest at the time of incident and the reward was later increased to ₹1 lakh by ADG Lucknow zone SN Sabat on September 7 last. He said the STF recovered two pistols and eight cartridges along with a bag containing daily use products that the accused had come to purchase from market while living secretly in a house.
