Illegal conversion case: UP ATS to charge 8 with conspiracy to wage war against country

LUCKNOW : The special judge (ATS court) in Lucknow has allowed the anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police to make additions in the First Informatio­n Report (FIR) to charge eight people, who were arrested over alleged illegal religious conversion, with conspiring to wage war against the country. The court also extended the judicial custody of the accused till September 14.

LUCKNOW: The special judge (ATS court) in Lucknow has allowed the anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of the Uttar Pradesh Police to make additions in the First Informatio­n Report (FIR) to charge eight people, who were arrested over alleged illegal religious conversion, with conspiring to wage war against the country.

Yogendra Ram Gupta, special judge (ATS court), Lucknow, on September 2, allowed the ATS to add Indian Penal Code sections 121 A (conspiring to wage war against the country) and 123 (concealing the existence of a design to wage war against the government) in the FIR lodged on June 20.

The court also extended the judicial custody of the accused till September 14.

The Uttar Pradesh ATS has arrested Mohd Umar Gautam, Mufti Kazi Jahangir Alam Kasmi, Irfan Sekh alias Irfan

Khna, Salahudin alias Jainuddin Sekh, Prasad Rameshwar Kanware, Bhupriya Vindo alias Arslan, Kausar Alam and Dr Faraj Babullah Shah in the illegal conversion case.

According to Mohan Prasad Verma, investigat­ion officer of ATS, the gang was involved in illegal conversion activities.

“During investigat­ion of the case, we came across several evidences that prove that the gang was involved in activities that come under sections 121A and 123 of the IPC. Therefore, we requested the court to add these two sections in the FIR ,” Verma said. The court approved our request, Verma added.

The ATS had lodged the FIR in this case on June 20 at its special police station in Lucknow.
